Updating order tags in Shopify can help you group, filter, and manage orders more effectively. Tags can be used for many purposes such as marking orders that require special attention, certain manual processes, or integration with third-party applications.

This article explains the steps to add or update order tags directly from Shopify Admin.

What Are Order Tags in Shopify?

Order tags are additional labels you can assign to an order in Shopify. These tags are not visible to customers but are very useful for internal operational needs.

Examples of tag usage:

  • "Urgent" for orders that need to be prioritized
  • "COD" for orders with Cash on Delivery payment method
  • "Biteship-Processed" for orders that are connected or processed through Biteship
  • "Manual Review" for orders that require prior verification
     

How to Add or Update Order Tags in Shopify

Follow these steps to add or change tags on your Shopify orders:

1. Log in to Shopify Admin

  1. Open the Shopify Admin page: yourstore.myshopify.com/admin
  2. Log in using your admin account.
     

2. Open the Orders Menu

  1. In the left sidebar, select Orders.
  2. You will see a list of all incoming orders to your store.
     

3. Select the Order You Want to Tag or Edit

  1. Click on an order number to open its details.
  2. You will be directed to the order detail page.
     

4. Add or Edit Order Tags

  1. On the right side or below the order title, find the Tags section.
  2. Click on the tag input area.
  3. To:
    • Add a new tag: type the tag name and press Enter.
    • Select an existing tag: click one of the tags that appear in the list.
    • Remove a tag: click the X on the tag you want to delete.
       

5. Save Changes

Shopify will automatically save changes after you add or remove tags. You do not need to press a save button.

 

Tips for Managing Order Tags

  • Use consistent tag names to make them easy to search and filter.
  • Avoid using tags that are too long or excessive.
  • Use tags to facilitate integration with applications such as Biteship, automations, or report filters.
  • Ensure all operational staff understand the standards for using tags in your store.
