In the Cash on Delivery (COD) service, the buyer pays for the package upon receiving the goods. But what if the package is not received and is eventually returned (sent back to the sender)? This article explains the status of COD fees and shipping costs if a return occurs.
What Is a COD Fee?
- COD fee is the payment amount that the buyer must pay when the package is received. This amount usually includes the price of the goods and may also include shipping costs depending on the sellerโs settings.
- COD fees will only be remitted to the seller if the package is successfully delivered and payment is successfully made by the buyer.
If a COD Package Is Returned, Will the COD Fee Still Be Charged?
No. If the package is not successfully delivered and is returned, then:
- The buyer does not make a payment.
- Biteship will not charge the COD fee to the sender.
- COD funds will not be remitted because the transaction is not completed.
What About the Shipping Cost?
This is important to note:
- Shipping costs will still be charged to the sender, even if the package fails to be delivered and is returned.
- In the logistics system, the delivery process is still carried out by the courier even if it ultimately fails, so the operational costs are still charged to the sender.
- Return shipping costs may also be charged, depending on the policy of the courier used.
Example Situation
- You send a COD package with a shipping cost of Rp20,000.
- The package fails to be received by the buyer and is returned to you.
- Because the buyer does not pay, then:
- COD fee is not charged.
- The shipping cost of Rp20,000 is still charged to you.
- If the courier applies a return fee, then the return shipping cost will also be charged.
- COD fee is not charged.
