This article explains in detail how the Biteship system calculates the cost of returning goods (returns) if the delivery fails or the buyer refuses the package. We will also include an example simulation table to help you better understand the mechanism.
What Is a Return Cost?
Return cost is the fee charged to return a package from the destination address back to the senderโs address if the initial delivery is unsuccessful (for example, due to an incorrect address, the buyer refusing to accept the package, or other reasons).
How Return Costs Are Calculated in Biteship
The return cost calculation is determined by each courier and is not set by Biteship. However, in general, there are two types of schemes used by couriers:
1. Return Cost = Full Shipping Cost (One-Way)
Some couriers charge the full cost for the return process, as if performing a new shipment from the destination back to the sender.
2. Return Cost = Percentage of Initial Shipping Cost
Certain couriers apply a lighter return fee, such as 50% of the original shipping cost.

Tips to Avoid Returns
- Always confirm the address and active phone number of the customer.
- Use the automatic address verification feature in the Biteship dashboard.
- Provide delivery notifications to buyers via email or WhatsApp.
